“From the Buddhist point of view, the main cause of all our problems is the basic ignorance that expresses itself as our instinctive clinging to a personal self, to really existing phenomena, and to a mistaken understanding of what happiness is . . . The only means for eliminating this fundamental blind spot is to develop its opposite: A sharp and clear awareness through which we see our mind and things as they really are.” – Buddhism 103, by Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche
Curious about Buddhism? Wondering about taming your mind? A Nalandabodhi study group is a great place to start (and to carry on …)
Buddhism 103: Karma, Rebirth and Selflessness is the third course in our Introduction to Buddhism study series. The class meets every second Saturday morning. All are welcome, newcomers and seasoned dharma students alike.
The introductory series lay the groundwork for more advanced Buddhist study while offering helpful advice on applying dharma in your life.
Buddhism 103 begins with instructions on analytical meditation — the means by which we generate insight into the true nature of mind and phenomena. Next is the Four Seals, which define what is distinctive and essential about the Buddhist view; the First Seal, for example: “Everything conditioned is impermanent.” The course then explores the Four Reminders, a simple yet profound practice that helps to turn one’s mind away from samsara. Finally, the course concludes with an in-depth discussion of the spiritual friend: How to work with a spiritual friend, the three types, and the ultimate spiritual friend.
Nalandabodhi’s in-person study groups are friendly and interactive. Facilitated by experienced dharma practitioners, these course draws on profound yet accessible texts by Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, the spiritual friend and founder of Nalandabodhi.
